Automatic facial coding versus electromyography of mimicked, passive, and inhibited facial response to emotional faces

چکیده

Decoding someone's facial expressions provides insights into his or her emotional experience. Recently, Automatic Facial Coding (AFC) software has been developed to provide measurements of expressions. Previous studies provided first evidence for the sensitivity such systems detect responses in study participants. In present experiment, we set out generalise these results affective as they can occur variable social interactions. Thus, presented (happy, neutral, angry) and instructed participants (N = 64) either actively mimic, look at them passively (n 21), inhibit their own reaction 22). A video stream AFC an electromyogram (EMG) zygomaticus corrugator muscles were registered continuously. mimicking condition, both EMG differentiated well between response different pictures. passive viewing inhibition condition did not changes whereas was still highly sensitive. Although only is sensitive when intend conceal reactions, data extend previous findings that a promising tool detection intense reaction.

Electromyography and Facial Paralysis

The facial motor system is responsible for functions critical to physical, social and psychological well-being (VanSwearingen & Brach, 1996). Facial nerve paralysis is a lifealtering clinical condition, with functional, aesthetic and communication implications for the individuals who are afflicted (Hadlock, 2008). It differs from most other clinical conditions in that it is the end result of a ...

Automatic Facial Expression Recognition Using 3D Faces

Automatic facial expression recognition has gained much attention during the last decade because of its potential application in areas such as more engaging human-computer interfaces. Automatic facial expression recognition is a sub-area of face analysis research that is based heavily on methods of computer vision, machine learning, and image processing. Many efforts either to create a novel or...

Automatic Facial Expression Analysis and Emotional Classification

In this thesis, a system for automatic facial expression analysis was designed and implemented. This system includes a monocular 3d head pose tracker to handle rigid movements, feature extraction based on Gabor wavelets and gradient orientation histograms, and a SVM classifier. Further more, a database with video sequences of acted and natural facial expression was compiled and tests were done,...

Unconscious facial reactions to emotional facial expressions.

Studies reveal that when people are exposed to emotional facial expressions, they spontaneously react with distinct facial electromyographic (EMG) reactions in emotion-relevant facial muscles. These reactions reflect, in part, a tendency to mimic the facial stimuli. We investigated whether corresponding facial reactions can be elicited when people are unconsciously exposed to happy and angry fa...

Emotional mimicry signals pain empathy as evidenced by facial electromyography

Facial mimicry has been suggested to be a behavioral index for emotional empathy. The present study is the first to investigate the link between facial muscle activity and empathy for pain by facial electromyographic (EMG) recording while observers watched videos depicting real-life painful events. Three types of visual stimulus were used: an intact painful scene and arm-only (needle injection)...
